If you are the author of a general-interest book and are interested in having an author photo considered for your book cover, please submit your photo by mail or email it to firstname.lastname@example.org. Due to space constraints, the University of Nebraska Press can not guarantee that your photo will be used on your book’s cover, however it can be used in various marketing and promotional materials for your book. If you are the author of a scholarly monograph and would like your photo used in promotional materials, please submit your photo using one of the methods listed above. The author photo deadline is six months prior to your book’s publication date. For example, if your book is scheduled for a September publication date, you should submit your photograph no later than March 1.
If you are interested in submitting an author photo for consideration on your book’s cover or for promotional use, we suggest that you choose a photographic studio or have a friend or family member take a few photos of you. Please show these guidelines to the photographer to ensure the photographer understands exactly what is required.
- ‘Business casual’ clothing
- Author must look straight at the camera
- Look as natural as possible
- Photos can be in color or black and white
What to Avoid
- Resting on hands or fists—this may look unnatural with just part of the hand showing when
the rest is cropped out.
- Inappropriate props—if you are using props please ensure relevance to your book. No sunglasses, please.
The photographs should bring out your personality in a non-formal, characteristic pose. The photos should be interesting, close up portraits. But not too close. We need your head, neck, and shoulders in the shot. If the photo is taken further away it may be cropped by Press staff in order to achieve this requirement. Ask the photographer to take a selection of shots using different techniques and poses.
Your expression in the photo should be similar to what you look like. For example, if you are serious, don’t force an unnatural smile. The idea is to bring out your personality. In addition to the shots that show off your personality, take a few in a normal pose.
Lighting and Background
- Lighting must come from all over
- Backgrounds should be a light color, preferably white
- Clothing must contrast with the background. We suggest wearing a dark, solid colored shirt.
Photos sent in electronic form should be at least 5” x 7” at 300 dpi (tif or jpg format). Electronic files and credit lines should be sent to email@example.com. Print copies should be sent to: University of Nebraska Press, Attn: Publicity, 1111 Lincoln Mall, Lincoln, NE 68588-0630
Permission from Photographer
When using a photo studio make sure that the photographer knows what the photo will be used for (publicity purposes, marketing materials, possible use on book cover) and ask for written permission from them to use the photo for these purposes. Send their credit line and permission to us with your photo file. If you have a friend or relative take the photo for you, make sure to send along a photo credit for them. If mailing a print copy of your photo, please indicate if you would like to have the photo returned to you.
