Congratulations on the forthcoming publication of your book. We’d like to introduce the marketing team and provide you a brief overview of what we do.
The marketing team is responsible for the promotion and sale of approximately 150 new books and more than 6,000 backlist books each year. We accomplish this, in part, through the following efforts.
The Author Information Form
We hope you received, filled out, and returned your Author Information Form (AIF) after you signed your contract with UNP. The more detailed your responses on the AIF, the more information we have with which to build a successful marketing plan.
The publication date for your book is most important. This is the date around which our marketing efforts will revolve. You will be informed by the marketing manager of this date once it has been set.
Prepublication quotes (commonly referred to as “blurbs”) from people with high visibility or good reputations in their field are an excellent way to draw attention to your book and influence people who make buying and book-review decisions. We will be in touch regarding blurbs well in advance of publication.
If you would like us to consider using an author photo on your book cover, please submit your photo by email as early as possible. We cannot guarantee that your photo will be used on your book’s cover. Review our Author Photo Guidelines.
The Seasonal Catalogs
UNP presents two catalogs of new books each year: one for the spring/summer season (books with publication dates from March through August) and one for the fall/winter season (books with publication dates from September through February). These catalogs are mailed to more than 15,000 recipients.
We welcome suggestions for suitable reviewers and will try to combine those suggestions with our own lists. We are happy to share with you the full list of reviewers upon request. The Publicity Manager and staff will also present your book to major media and work with those contacts on reviews, feature stories, and op-eds. Authors are encouraged to write and pitch their own op-eds to media contacts. Please contact the publicity manager for more information.
We create a flyer to promote your book and will email you a PDF along with a link to your book page on UNP’s website. The book flyer is an effective promotional tool to use at any conferences you attend. Please distribute this flyer as widely as possible.
UNP endorses the use of social media in all its forms, and we encourage you to use any social platforms with which you are comfortable. Our publicity manager oversees the Press’s social marketing campaigns. We also encourage you to write a guest post for the UNP blog on a topic about or related to your book. Contact the publicity manager for more information. Read our Social Media Guide.
UNP uses a variety of online tools to promote your book. Our website is the focal point of this electronic marketing and represents our complete catalog of in-print books. We also conduct email campaigns to promote our books. If you have your own website, please link to your book’s page on the UNP website.
We create catalogs and flyers to promote your book where and when appropriate.
UNP exhibits our new and recent books at more than thirty-five academic conferences and trade shows each year. Your book may be featured at relevant exhibits. You can find a complete list of the meetings we plan to attend in the forthcoming year on our website. [link to calendar of events]
UNP advertises books in appropriate media when possible and relevant. We have a limited advertising budget, so your book may be grouped with related titles if advertised.
Email us for more information about submitting your book for awards.
Author Events and Appearances
If you wish to do bookstore readings or signings, we request that you arrange these. Any events you schedule should follow the publication date of your book. Please send complete information about them to your publicist so that we may help promote the event. Include the date, time, bookstore or organization name and full address, and the event coordinator’s name, phone number, and email address.
We look forward to working with you to make your book a success!
