INTERNSHIPS

The University of Nebraska Press offers several internship opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate students and UNL and UNO. Students interested in the program may approach it in several ways. If you are an undergraduate student, the UCare program offers paid internships with the Press. You will find their application form at their website (http://www.unl.edu/ucare/positions.shtml). Also, the Honors English program at UNL offers internships for credit. See Jan Jarvis in the English Department. Graduate students in English may also sign up for internships for credit. See the seasonal course catalog for the call number. In addition, UNO's Professional Writing program in the Department of English has a formal internship for credit program with UNP. You must be a graduate student in the program and must apply for the internship through the program directors. Internship opportunities may include:

Director's office:
One intern to assist Director in researching and promoting business partnerships, development opportunities, and pertinent community events, the intern will work closely with the Director 1.) to identify and make contact with mutual or complementary interests with the University of Nebraska Press; 2.) to identify and make contact with organizations and individuals who are potential financial supporters of the Press's varied list of publications; 3.) to identify the community events in Lincoln and Omaha that would benefit the Press's statewide reputation, visibility, and sales.
Bison Books Division of Editorial Department:
Two interns: One to help with marketing and sales, and a second to help with 1.) Internet and library research on out-of-print titles, biographical information of authors, and marketing information for specific titles; 2.) assist staff in securing permissions for titles to be published; 3.) assist in securing introductions for reprinted books, proofreading introductions, and other material added to reprinted books.
Production and Design Department:
One intern with strong computer skills and ability to discern image quality of scanned images for book reproduction to assist in 1.) scanning images for book interiors; 2.) researching to find art for cover design; 3.) proofreading
Manuscript Editorial Division of Editorial Department
One intern to assist in copyediting/proofreading (for this internship, they would prefer someone who could commit to two semesters). The candidates for this internship must be willing to take a copyediting/proofreading test to qualify. Past experience with copyediting and familiarity with Chicago Manual of Style is desirable. The intern will copyedit indexes and other shorter texts as well as assisting where needed in other proofreading tasks.
IT Department
One intern to assist with special projects, including the creation of a digital repository; website projects/enhancements; creation of an Intranet; transition from shared network drives to MS SharePoint, etc. This intern will also help with computer and software upgrades (installation of new versions of Windows of MS Office; serve as a liaison with the warehouse to quickly identify and solve IT problems in warehouse, and to perform routine website maintenance and troubleshooting.
Marketing & Development Department
Nine (9) interns described as follows:

1.) Publicity Intern. The ideal candidate for this internship will possess strong time management skills, excellent interpersonal communication skills (both verbal and written), and strong attention to detail. Familiarity with Microsoft Access and other databases, as well as Microsoft Office programs is required. This intern will work with the Publicity Coordinator to assist in actively promoting UNP titles to scholarly and general interest media. The intern will provide support in the following areas: 1.) opening departmental mail; 2.) scanning publications for book reviews; 3.) process and fulfill review copy requests; 4.) database entry, 5.) handle a variety of author and outside publicity requests; 6.) interact with national and local media via phone and email; 7.) perform routine office tasks such as photocopying, filing, faxing, shipping packages, 8.) conduct research and handle special publicity projects as needed.

2.) Development Intern. The successful intern for this position will work closely with the UNP Development staff and will assist with 1.) researching funding opportunities for Press books and series; 2.) complete grant applications to state and local agencies and to private foundations; 3.) work with authors on securing university subventions; 4.) write articles for the Friends of UNP newsletter; 5.) assist with research, writing, and proofing assignments as needed.

3.) Electronic Sales Intern. Ideal candidate will have experience (or aptitude) for web marketing; must be proficient in MS Office and have extensive experience in Internet research, as well as experience with HTML. The intern will 1.) format PDFs with bookmarks, pagination, and cover images; 2.) compile spreadsheet metadata for electronic vendors from a variety of sources, including the UNP website and title management database; 3.) create and maintain e-mail lists and electronic campaigns through our e-mail program; 4.) research electronic / web marketing opportunities for forthcoming books; 5.) scan books covers and/or book content for UNP web site. 6.) seasonally check Amazon.com and other online booksellers for missing covers or book information.

4.) Sales Intern will assist the Sales Coordinator in a variety of ways, including 1.) printing a weekly report of possible reprint titles; 2.) creating price sheets for reprint titles; 3.) mailing covers, galleys, and other promotional materials to sales reps and other sales contacts; 4.) assembling and mailing seasonal sales kits and sales rep supplies; 5.) organize monthly sales reports from Ingram; 6.) assemble information packets for new retailers and wholesalers; 7.) perform various copying and mailing projects as needed; 8.) help with other projects as needed.

5.) Direct Mail Intern. The successful candidate for this internship will have excellent writing skills and the ability to pay attention to detail. This intern will assist the Direct Mail manager with concise book descriptions for a variety of subject catalogs, seasonal catalogs, and jacket copy, and will help proofread catalog copy and jacket copy.

6.) Event Planning Intern. Every year, the Press hosts several events: fundraisers, literary salons, readings, etc. The successful intern(s) must have strong organizational skills and the ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Experience in planning a plus.

7.) Blog Assistant. This intern should be knowledgeable in Word and Excel programs. Knowledge of Microsoft Paint is a plus. This person must know how to navigate the Internet, and know or be willing to learn Mozilla, Macintosh's Safari as well as Microsoft Explorer, Typepad, or similar platforms for posting on the web. The intern will 1.) update and post Blog reviews; 2.) check Blog for new posts to edit and add cover images for; 3.) convert audio files to MP3 format; 4.) explore podcast and Blog topics; 5.) post regularly under UNP or self; 6.) maintain a clear record of authors contact information; 7.) update author info database, and 8.) search the Internet for references to UNP Blog.

8.) Blog Coordinator. This intern will need skills in proofreading, editing, typing, communication, basic math, Internet research, and creative vision to assist the Publicity Coordinator in managing the UNP Blog. The winning candidate will possess the same computer skills as those mentioned in the Blog Assistant posting above. This intern will 1.) find new Blog authors; 2.) update invitation letters for potential Blog contributors; 3.) edit and add cover images and links to site; 4.) track contributors postings regularly and regularly contribute posts of his or her own; 5.) update featured author events, and 6.) regularly post reviews of UNP books and other stories featuring UNP.

Journals Department:
One intern to assist with all aspects of editorial and production of journals. These may include 1.) cleanup and coding of electronic files; 2.) proofreading; 3.) transferring author corrections; 4.) checking blues; 5.) preparing copyedited manuscript for typesetting and camera-ready manuscripts for printing, among other duties as assigned by the Journals Manager or Project Editor. The ideal candidate for this internship will be familiar with standard work-processing programs, have in-depth knowledge of MS Word, excellent oral and written communication skills, strong grammar and spelling skills. The successful candidate for this internship must be able to work independently, prioritize goals and multi-task. Foreign language skills, especially French, a plus.
Acquisitions Division of Editorial Department:
Occasionally the acquisitions division will request an intern for special projects as desired by individual editors who are developing large projects that may require extra help with permissions and/ or research.
