Will Rogers Medallion Award

This award is given to books, poems, and films that exemplify the American cowboy way in honor of its namesake Will Rogers. The final rankings will be released at WRMA’s Ceremony and Banquet on October 19, 2024, in Fort Worth, Texas.

Galloping Gourmet (Bison Books, 2023) by Steve Friesen is a winner in the Western Biographies/Memoirs category.

Changing Woman (Bison Books, 2023) by Venetia Hobson Lewis is a winner in the Western Traditional Fiction category.

Jon Gjerde Prize

The Jon Gjerde Prize is given annually by the Midwestern History Association to the author(s) of the best book in Midwestern history published during the previous calendar year (2023).

Agriculture in the Midwest, 1815-1900 (Nebraska, 2023) by R. Douglas Hurt is the winner of the 2024 prize. Read the judge’s comments here.

The First Migrants (Bison Books, 2023) by Richard Edwards and Jacob K. Friefeld is an honorable mention.

State Library of Kansas’s Notable Books

The State Library of Kansas annually picks high-quality books that celebrate “the rich stories and vibrant spirit of the state.” Any book written by Kansas authors or about Kansas qualifies but only the best 15 are selected.

2024 IPPY Awards

The Independent Publisher Book Awards (IPPY Awards) are given out annually in a wide variety of categories highlighting the accomplished books from independent publishers.

Acetylene Torch Songs (Nebraska, 2024) by Sue William Silverman won silver in the Writing/Publishing category.

Delivered Under Fire (Potomac Books, 2023) by Candice Shy Hooper won silver in the Biography category and the U.S. History category.

Murder in Manchuria (Potomac Books, 2023) by Scott D. Seligman won gold in the Regional: Australia/New Zealand-Aotearoa Pacific Rim Non-Fiction category.

2023 Julie Suk Award

The Julie Suk award honors poetry books published by small presses. Winners are still being judged.

The CMA Book Awards recognizes and rewards outstanding works that resonate with Catholic values, promote faith, and inspire reflection and understanding.

The Midwest Book Awards are distributed by the Midwest Independent Publishers Association. Awards recognize creativity in content and execution, overall book quality, and the book’s unique contribution to its subject area.

Ted Kooser (Nebraska, 2023) by Carla Ketner is a winner in the children’s nonfiction category.

Godfall (Nebraska, 2023) by Van Jensen is a winner in the fiction category.

The Derek Walcott Prize for Poetry

In partnership with The Derek Walcott Festival and the Boston Playwrights’ Theatre, Arrowsmith Press awards the prize to a full-length book by a poet who is not a U.S. citizen, published in the previous calendar year. The winner will be announced on October 15, 2024.
